Open Access: Article Processing Charges (APCs)

Many open access journals require authors pay an article processing charge (APC) which can range from hundreds to thousands of dollars. The publisher's intent behind APCs is to recoup publishing costs.

Other important information:

  • Not all journals charge APCs. We encourage you to seek out OA journals in your field that do not.
  • Grant-funded research that requires public access allows APC fees to be paid for by the grant. You may need to include these costs at the time of submission.
  • There are concerns about hybrid journals where publishers are perceived as--and most likely are--double-dipping by charging libraries subscription fees and authors publishing fees.

Header: Offsetting APC Costs

UM Libraries has negotiated alternative approaches to publishing/subscribing with the following publishers to allow UM authors to publish open access at no cost. You may see these agreements referred to as transformative agreements, read-and-publish agreements, or publish-and-read agreements.

Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Journals

Corresponding authors affiliated with the University of Mississippi can publish open access (journals and conference proceedings only) at not cost. ACM asks that authors use their institutional email accounts during the process to facilitate matching authors to their institution's open access agreement.

For more information, you can review the ACM Open brochure. You can also contact Brian Young (bwyoung@olemiss.edu) for more information.

Cambridge University Press

Anyone affiliated with the University of Mississippi who is the corresponding author can publish open access with Cambridge University Press without paying any fees. For more information, please refer to pages 8-10 of this PDF and/or contact Brian Young (bwyoung@olemiss.edu).

Open Access Fund

UM Libraries also administers the Open Access Fund which will help offset the APC fees for researchers who do not have funding through a grant or the university to cover costs.
