The cutter table is used to create cutter numbers, also known as book numbers. They place items within the same classification scheme in a logical order, and are usually assigned according to the main entry of the corresponding bibliographic record, often a person or corporate body. If there is no person nor body, or if the authorship cannot be determined, the title is the main entry.
The letters in the table represent the letter that follows the initial letter of the author's surname (vowel, consonant, etc.). The number is that which should be used; however, it may be necessary to add other numbers or to use judgment to allow for growth when providing numbers for extremely common names.
When Cuttering for Roman or Arabic numerals, use the Cutters .A12 - .A19, and numbered to precede all entries beginning with the letter A. However, if entries already in the shelflist have been assigned "documents numbers" (e.g. .A5 for the corporate heading United States. Dept. of ...) Cutter numerals to file directly after those entries. Because of the infinite range of numbers, choose a Cutter toward the center of the available span when cuttering for the first numeral in a class. This will allow room for both smaller and larger numbers.
