One Search

One Search: Basic Search

Step 1: Go to libraries.olemiss.edu.

We want to start our research by scrolling down past the image to the Search UM Libraries box in order to use One Search, which will allow us to search for scholarly journals articles, newspaper articles, books, and more.

Step 2: The default search option is One Search.

To begin searching, type your search term or terms into the search box and press enter. In this example, we are doing a search for social media.

Step 3: The results page.

We got over 5 million results! That is too many to look through, so we want to narrow our search to get fewer results.

Step 4: Refining your search results.

There are several tools to help you further refine your search results. One simple tool is to put quotation marks around and phrases (two or more words that you need together in a specific order). The other tools to further refine your search can be found on the left side of your page under Refine your search.

Under Refine your search you can find various ways to limit your search specific types of content such as, Full Text Online, Peer-Reviewed, or even Print Books at UM Libraires.

For this example we will select the Peer-Reviewed limiter. This option will limit our results to only peer-reviewed or scholarly sources.

Step 5: Content Type.

You can also limit by Content Type using the options in the box on the left directly below Refine your search. Using these limiters you can limit your results to a specific type of resources such as a book, journal article, or newspaper article. For this example we will select journal article.

Step 6: Publication Date.

Below content type is a Publication Date limiter. You can choose 1 year, 3 years, 5 years, 10 years, or select the pencil to the right of the box to use a custom date range.

Step 7: Full Text Online.

To access the full text of an article or online resource, click Full Text Online below the title and source details.

Not every result in One Search will be available online, some will say Citation Online instead. Click Citation Online to submit a request for the full text of the item.

Step 8: Save and Share Tools.

To the right of each result title you will see four icons.

Bookmark

The bookmark is white by default, but when selected it turns blue and adds that resource to the bookmark folder found in the top right of the page. You will see an number notification on the bookmark in the top right corner if you have added content.

Permanent link (paperclip)

To the right of the bookmark is the permanent link or paperclip icon. This link is savable and provides a direct permanent link back to the resource.

Quotation marks

Anytime you see the quotation icon in a library resource, that is an indication that the resource will generate a citation for you. Click the quotation icon in One Search and you will then be able to select the citation style of your choice via the Choose a Citation Format dropdown. Once you select a citation style, the citation will be generated and you can copy and paste it as needed.

It is important to note when using any citation builder that there may be mistakes within the generated citation. Always check the generated citation for mistakes.

Envelope

The final icon to the far right is the envelope. This icon allows you to email a result. Click the envelop icon and then type an email address into the send to email box, next select your citation style from the drop down. The email will include a permanent link and the citation.
