Scroll down to the Search UM Libraries search box and perform a Basic Search.
Once you’ve preformed a basic search, click on Options on the right corner of the search box, this pulls up the Advanced Search box.
Here you can add additional search terms to your original search. Let’s add “job search” to our existing search.
If you use the word AND you are using a Boolean operator. Boolean logic forms the basis of mathematical sets and, in the case of One Search, database logic.
Boolean operators connect your search words together to either narrow or broaden your set of results. The three basic Boolean operators are: AND, OR, and NOT.
Use Boolean operators to focus a search, particularly when your topic contains multiple search terms, like “social media” AND “job search.”
You can also use Boolean operators to include synonyms to broaden your search, like “social media” AND (“job search” OR “job seeking”).
Click the "all fields" button next to your search string to show the drop down menu of all of the fields that you can search by. Selecting title or abstract may be particularly helpful in narrowing your search, but any of these fields can help you in finding the material you are looking for.
Scroll down below the search boxes and you’ll see additional limiters. The limiters are similar to those on the left-hand side of the screen in a in the basic search.
This limiter allows you to choose 1 year, 3 years, 5 years, 10 years, or select to use a custom date range.
Provides limiter options such as: Peer-Reviewed, Scholarly & Peer-Reviewed, Full Text Online, Open Access, and Library Catalog.
In the Advanced Search box under Content Type, you will often see more options than in the Basic Search.
This limiter allows you to narrow your search to a specific discipline such as: agriculture, anatomy * physiology, anthropology, applied sciences, architecture, astronomy & astrophysics, and more.
This limiter allows you to search for results in many different languages.
This limiter allows you to limit your results to items in a specific library collection or location.
