The University of Mississippi Libraries, in conjunction with the University of Mississippi Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, are offering consultation on data management associated with requirements of grant funding agencies.

Data are "any information or observations that are associated with a particular project, including experimental specimens, technologies, and products related to the inquiry."  Data can be both physical and digital, and can come in many different forms. Some examples include: documents, genetic sequences, measurements, software code, audio, and images.                                                                                             -Department of Health & Human Services

Many funding agencies now require the data created as part of your grant-funded research be made freely available online, and have made data management plans part of the grant application.  Each agency has slightly different requirements, so be sure to check what your specific grant requires.  The Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC) has created a resource that outlines the data management and sharing requirements for all of the major funding agencies; if you are still not sure, contact the University Libraries at lib-data@olemiss.edu.
