Published between 1923 and 2021, Ogonek was one of the oldest weekly magazines in Russia, carrying original works by such Soviet cultural luminaries as Vladimir Mayakovsky, Isaac Babel, Ilya Ilf and Evgeny Petrov. Under the leadership of editor Anatoli Sofronov, Ogonek became an influential outlet for some of the most well-known and respected Soviet writers, visual artists, photographers and reporters. Later, at the height of Perestroika, Sofronov's successor Vitaly Korotich turned the journal into a lively space for edgy political commentary, criticism, and satire. Because of its mass circulation and popularity, Ogonek was able to unite Soviet Union’s geographically diverse population through important and imposing narratives, conveying the Soviet cultural idiom to the reading public.
