HIS 400: Where We Live: Home

This guide supports the research done in Dr. Marchiel's History 400 course, taught in Spring 2017.

Journal Articles

The three databases listed below are good places to start when looking for scholarly journal articles.  However, due to the potential interdisiplinarity of your topics, you may need to consult databases from other subjects.  If you are not finding relevant results in these databases, find another database in the full list of scholarly databases the library subscribes to, or use Google Scholar to search across many disciplines.

Government Documents

The University of Mississippi is a Federal Regional Depository Library and has a large collection of government documents.  Some are housed in the library, but many are available online.  The library collects documents from the federal government and from the Mississippi state government.

Government documents include laws; codes; Congressional committee hearings; reports, statistics, and other publications from executive agencies; maps; and much more.  You can find government documents by searching in the library catalog or in the online resources accessed at the link below.

Finding Federal Government Documents in the Library

Federal government documents are arranged according to the agency from which they originated, not by subject like the rest of the library.  For example, documents published by the Department of Housing and Urban Development have call numbers beginning with HH, and documents originating from Congress have call numbers that begin with X or Y.  See the full list of federal document classifications below.

Government documents are located on the first floor of the library.

To find federal or state documents in the catalog, use the advanced search feature to limit results by location to federal or state documents.

State government documents are stored offsite, so you will need to request any state documents that you would like to use.  They will be delivered to the library within 24 hours, and you will receive a notification when they are ready.
